AGCM has initiated Investigation against Major Players of Pharma Industry in Italy

Italian Competition Authority has initiated an investigation against several major players of pharmaceutical sector including Novartis, Genentech, Biogen and Samsung Bioepis. AGCM contended that these companies colluded to eliminate competition for a biosimilar of the drug lucentis. Further, AGCM alleges that these companies came together and delayed the launch of Byooviz in Italy, the Netherlands and the U.K. Such investigation shows commitment of AGCM to protect competition in pharmaceutical sector.

UK’s Competition and Markets Authority has initiated investigation against Nationwide’s Acquisition of Virgin Money

Nationwide Building Society’s proposed acquisition of Virgin Money UK for $3.7 billion came under the investigation of UK’s Competition and Market Authority (CMA). As a part of the investigation process the CMA has to determine whether such merger will result to “substantial lessening of competition” within the UK’s financial sector and therefore, has invited comments from relevant stakeholders.

Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. L.P. (KKR), an investment giant of the U.S., has achieved unconditional antitrust approval of European Commission (EC) for its acquisition of Telecom Italia’s fixed-line network, a deal worth as much as 22 billion euros ($24 billion). This approval represents a significant milestone as it marks the first time a former telephone monopoly in a major European nation has divested its landline grid.

Amendments to Kenya’s Competition Act to curb Anti-Competitive activities of Big Tech

In an effort to stop big tech companies from engaging in anti-competitive practices, the Competition Authority of Kenya (CAK) recently proposed substantial amendments to the Competition Act of Kenya. With this action, the Kenyan government is taking a firm stand against the overwhelming domination held by global technology companies like Google, Amazon, X, and Apple over small enterprises in the country. In the proposed amendment, CAK has included the word ‘Digital Activities’ under section 2 of the Competition Act thereby covering the big tech giants under the ambit of the Competition Act.
