The United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has issued its final order against the Intuit Inc. (Intuit) which owns TurboTax – popular tax calculation software in the USA, alleged to be engaged in deceptive advertising in contravention of the Federal Trade Commission Act, 1914. According to the FTC Intuit ran advertisements claiming that consumer’s availing the service of TurboTax can file their tax returns for free when most of its consumers were ineligible for availing this free service. Thus, the FTC has prohibited Intuit from advertising any of its goods & services as “free”, unless it’s free for all; otherwise, Intuit should give details in close proximity on the percentage of consumers who qualify for “free” service.
