EC invites public comments on commitments made by Apple regarding third-party access to its payment infrastructure

The European Commission (EC) invited public comments on commitments offered by Apple regarding third-party access to the underlying technology (Near-Field Communication or NFC) used for making contactless payments through Apple’s mobile devices – iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch etc. Currently, Apple Pay is the only mobile wallet option available to consumers of iOS devices and also the only mobile application having access to the necessary hardware and software systems enabling contactless payments through iOS devices. According to EC, such exclusivity in access to key infrastructure may restrict competition in the “market for mobile wallets on iOS devices”, for which Apple has offered commitments that would allow interoperability and free access of Application Programming Interface enabling NFC functionality to third-party app developers.
